What is the University Preparation Program?
The UNSW University Preparation Program (UPP) is a preparatory study program for older students who either do not possess formal qualifications or whose academic qualifications do not satisfy the minimum entry requirements for admission to the University. The program has been designed to assess your academic potential and to provide a realistic environment within which you can develop the skills to manage university study effectively. For full information, visit the University Preparation Program page.
The Application Form, Reduced Fee Form, and UPP brochure as well as details of the UPP GE Courses that are available in the Humanities Stream are available to download from the UPP webpage. If you would prefer to receive a package by mail, please email your name and postal address to: ugadmis@unsw.edu.au
The University Orientation & Study Skills course (UOSS) is a core component of The University Preparation Program (UPP). This course introduces students to university life by giving them the opportunity to develop the research, writing and verbal skills needed to manage tertiary studies with confidence and success.
Topics covered include:
The University Orientation and Study Skills course is offered by The Learning Centre.
Who can enrol in the UOSS course?
The University Orientation & Study Skills course is only available to students enrolled in The University Preparation Program (UPP).
How can I contact my UOSS class tutor?
Your class tutor will supply contact details during your first UOSS seminar (held during Lesson 2).
Where are my UOSS classes held?
Your classes will be held in a classroom and lecture theatre on UNSW campus. You can find out where your classes are located below.
What do I do if I need to withdraw from the program?
Students who discontinue their current enrolment with the intention of resuming their studies at a later date need to ensure that they formally apply for withdrawal from the UPP program.
There is a cut-off date for withdrawal from UPP. Notice of withdrawal must be made in writing to Admissions. Withdrawal status will be granted if withdrawal takes place on or before the cut-off date. Withdrawn status means the student is eligible for a partial refund of fees.
If withdrawal takes place after the cut-off date the student will be considered as having failed the course. You must put into writing your reasons for withdrawal and send copies to both The Learning Centre and Admissions.
You are advised to purchase:
University Orientation & Study Skills Course Readings REGZ9000.
You can find the Course Readings available for sale at the University Bookshop, Quadrangle Building, Ph. 9385 4065 (while stocks last). If it is sold out, students can:
How are UOSS students assessed?
Assessment is continuous and comprises class participation, a seminar presentation, two essays and a final examination.
The assignments that UOSS students undertake are designed to prepare them for some of the typical forms of assessment they will encounter in a degree program. Tasks like essays, presentations and exams are common forms of assessment at university.
How do I hand in my UOSS assignments?
The UOSS course has procedures for submitting assignments.
What if I need more time to finish my work?
The UOSS course has a policy on overdue assignments and extensions that all students should refer to.
If I'm a UPP student, can I use The Learning Centre services?
Not yet. The Learning Centre offers learning and communication assistance to all UNSW students enrolled in a degree program. As the University Preparation Program is a 'non-award' program (that is, not counted towards a degree) UPP students are not yet eligible to use Learning Centre services.
HOWEVER - by undertaking the UOSS course offered by The Learning Centre you're actually learning all the study skills and strategies we teach. You're also learning them in much greater detail than enrolled students. So you don't really need our services yet - but we hope to see you next year!
What do I do if I'm having problems with a UOSS assignment?
If you're having trouble with your work, ask your UOSS class tutor for some advice. You can also make an appointment to see the UOSS Coordinators.
