What is the University Preparation Program?
The UNSW University Preparation Program (UPP) is an enabling program for adults aged 21 and over who either do not possess formal qualifications or whose academic qualifications do not satisfy the minimum entry requirements for admission to university study. The program has been designed to assess academic potential and to provide a realistic environment within which students can develop the skills to manage tertiary study effectively. For full information, visit the University Preparation Program page
How do I apply?
Application forms are available from the UPP webpage. If you would prefer to receive a package by mail, please email your name and postal address to: UPP@unsw.edu.au
Who can enrol in the UOSS courses?
The University Orientation & Study Skills courses are only available to students enrolled in The University Preparation Program (UPP).
The University Orientation & Study Skills 1 course (UOSS 1) is a core component of The University Preparation Program (UPP). It is compulsory for ALL UPP students and is offered exclusively to them. This course introduces students to university life by giving them the opportunity to develop the research, writing and verbal skills needed to manage tertiary studies with confidence and success.
What is UOSS 2?
The University Orientation and Study Skills 2 course (REGZ9255) is a core component of The University Preparation Program (UPP) for students undertaking the Humanities or the Science streams. UOSS 2 builds on the fundamental academic skills studied in Semester 1.
UOSS 2 focuses on developing skills in writing and presenting critical reviews and reports by completing a small research project. The UOSS 2 course also introduces students to the basic foundations of conducting research in the social sciences.
How can I contact my UOSS class tutor?
Your class tutor will supply contact details during your first UOSS tutorial (held during Week 2).
I'm a student with a disability. Who should I contact?
UNSW is committed to ensuring that, as far as is possible, all students are allowed to participate equally in the educational opportunities offered by the University. As part of this commitment, it provides a range of services for students with disabilities. These include note-takers, readers or sign interpreters, examination support, library provisions and resource materials. If you require assistance contact the Equity Officer (Disability) as soon as you can to discuss your support needs. Telephone (02) 9385 4770, email equity_diversity@unsw.edu.au or visit the web site at: http://www.studentequity.unsw.edu.au/.

Where are my UOSS classes held?
Your classes will be held in a classroom and lecture theatre on UNSW campus. It's important to check the locations of your classrooms each Semester, as they may change. You can find out where your classes are located below.
Should I buy any textbooks? Where do I find class notes?
Information about textbooks and class notes here.
How can I learn to use Blackboard?
Visit UNSW Blackboard Student Support for further information and guides for getting started.
How about my Student ID, email & zPass? Do I really need them?
YES, you really need them. In order to study you need to access a range of online services (myUNSW, zMail Student email, Blackboard, Library Online) and so will need your student ID and zPass. Visit the Getting Started site for more info (much of this is aimed at students enrolled in degree programs, but much of it applies to UPP students)
How do I get my results?
Results are emailed to your zMail account after examinations have finished
for each semester. For more information about zMail: https://www.it.unsw.edu.au/students/zmail/index.html
How are UOSS students assessed?
Assessment is continuous and comprises a variety of assignments that are designed to prepare UOSS students for some of the typical forms of assessment they will encounter in a degree program. Tasks like essays, reports, oral presentations, critical reviews, annotated bibliographies and exams are common forms of assessment at university. As many university courses are offered via online learning managment sustems, students also undertake online learning tasks.
What if I need more time to finish my work?
UOSS courses have a policy on overdue assignments and extensions that all students should refer to.
If I'm a UPP student, can I use The Learning Centre services?
Limited individual consultations are available via The Learning Centre's Peer Writing Assistant Program.
HOWEVER - if you are unable to make use of this service, don't be too concerned. By undertaking the UOSS courses offered by The Learning Centre you're actually learning all the study skills and strategies we teach. You're also learning them in much greater detail than enrolled students.
What do I do if I'm having problems with a UOSS assignment?
If you're having trouble with your work, ask your UOSS class tutor for some advice. You can also make an appointment to see the UOSS coordinator.
