UOSS Assignment Procedures
Handing in Your Work
UOSS Policy on Late Work & Extensions
Handing in Your Work
- All work must be submitted by the due date before or during class time.
- Late submissions will be penalised by loss
of marks (5% of the overall mark per day).
- All extensions require a reasonable excuse
(e.g. medical) and must be supported by documentation.
All written assignments must be handed in during classes on the due date.
However, if this is not possible, there are alternatives:
- Outside class hours: Assignments may be handed
in outside class hours at The Learning Centre,
LG13, North Wing, Chancellery Building (walk through Student Central).
- Opening hours are 9am-5pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-2.30pm on Fridays.
- If you need to submit an assignment after office hours, there is
an assignment ‘drop-box’ fixed to the outside wall on the right-hand
side. Please do not push assignments under the door.
- Email & ‘snail mail’: NO
UOSS assignment submissions will be accepted via email unless
special previous arrangements have been made with your Tutor and the UOSS
Coordinator. Students will then
be expected to submit a hard copy at the first possible opportunity.
- Under exceptional circumstances
(and only with
the permission of the UOSS
Coordinator)
assignments can be submitted by post. However, when submitting assignments
by any means other than handing it directly to your tutor, it is your responsibility
to check and confirm that the assignment has been received.
Assignment Cover Sheets
When written assignments are handed in, they must have an essay cover sheet.
Cover sheets are available:
These sheets double as a declaration of original work and as a receipt of
your work. They must be attached to the front of your assignments.
Remember:
- For guidelines on assignment presentation, see the section outlining
General Conventions for Assignments.
- Submissions must be stapled securely.
- Do NOT submit work in folders or plastic covers.
- Make copies of your work. It is your responsibility to make copies of all
your assessment tasks prior to handing them in.
- Computer problems are the responsibility of the student. If you have a
computer problem, then hand in a handwritten assignment.

UOSS Policy on Late Work & Extensions
The following policies apply to every student in the University
Orientation & Study
Skills courses.
- All assignments must be completed and submitted regardless
of how overdue they may be. If all work is not handed in, this
will result in automatic failure of the course. Unless students have
an approved extension, the very last date for submission of late work the
final day of Semester.
- Late assignments (handed in after the due date without an extension)
will result in marks being deducted.
- Late assignments will be penalised 5% of the overall mark per late day
(including weekends).
- Assignments handed in late on extension (that is, after the date of the
extension) will lose 10% of the overall mark automatically and a further
5% of the overall mark per late day.
Extensions
The UOSS courses have a formal process of application for extension:
- If an extension is needed, it must be asked for ONE WEEK before the due
date. NO extensions will be given on or after the due date of an assignment.
- Late submissions without an extension will result in marks being deducted.
- Extensions will only be granted for illness or serious problems beyond
your control. Applications on the grounds of illness must be supported
by documentation (eg, a medical certificate.) The demands of employment
are not an acceptable excuse for late assignments.
Further details are available in the UOSS 1/ UOSS 2 Course Information
booklets (available on Blackboard) or from the UOSS
Coordinator.
Tutorial Presentation Extensions
Due to timetable constraints, extensions for tutorial presentations
can only be granted in exceptional circumstances.
- If you are unable to give your seminar
presentation on the set date, you must contact your tutor or the UOSS
Coordinator to inform them of your situation.
- You will need to provide
appropriate documentation to support your claim, or there will be a 20%
late penalty on the overall mark.
- You will be expected to provide the documentation and present your seminar
the following week, or present at another time negotiated with your tutor.
- If there are no times available and the presentation is not completed,
a fail will be recorded.
Special Consideration
On some occasions sickness, misadventure, or other circumstance beyond your
control may prevent you from completing a course requirement or attending
or submitting assessable work on the due date. It is also possible that such
situations may significantly affect your performance in an assessable task.
The University has procedures that allow you to apply for consideration for
the affected assessments.
You should note that merely submitting a request for consideration does
not automatically mean that it will be granted, nor that you will be awarded
an amended result. For example, if you have a poor record of attendance or
performance throughout a semester/year in a course, you may be failed regardless
of illness or other reason affecting a final assessment in that course.
If you believe that you have grounds for special consideration due to serious
illness or misadventure beyond your control, you must make formal application
for consideration as soon as practicable after the problem occurs, and within
three working days of the assessment to which it refers. Be sure to inform
the UOSS Coordinator and your tutor of your circumstances as soon as possible.
Formal applications for special consideration are available from the UOSS
coordinator.
