Some schools and faculties are beginning to offer assistance through 'Peer Mentoring' schemes, where students help their less experienced colleagues with their studies.

The UNSW Counselling Service offers peer mentoring programmes especially for students in transition.

Share your concerns; other students can be a great source of information and support.

While staff members have lots of qualifications and experience and tend to be experts in their fields, they are not mind readers!!

If you need help with your studies, ask! Your lecturers and tutors have set consultation hours every week to assist their students. If you can't attend then, make an appointment.

• Particular lecturers are given responsibility for first year students and courses. They can assist you.
• Go to see your tutor or lecturer during their consultation period.
• Prepare a list of questions to ask or points that you wish to clarify.
• Ask questions in tutorials.
• Find out if there are programs to assist first year students in your school or faculty.
