Faculty or discipline-based programs

The Learning Centre is able, subject to staff availability, to offer workshops and component of courses in faculties and schools. These focus on the specific academic skills required by the discipline and draw on materials from the subject areas. These courses work best when the lecturer or course convener works with The Learning Centre to develop the specific program for the students. Programs for faculties and schools are usually arranged by request through The Learning Centre Director.

Examples of these initiatives are:

  • In Faculty of Engineering Mining Engineering Honours program, The Learning Centre has developed a workbook-guide on writing a literature review and team teaches two two-hour lecture/workshops on preparing a literature review and writing clearly. Analysis of past honours thesis reports and mind mapping the literature relevant to each student’s research topic are two examples of in-class activities.
  • In Science Faculty’s School of BEES, honours program, The Learning Centre has developed a series of four two-hour workshops on preparing a literature review, developing a clear problem statement, writing clearly, and practice in presenting  a research proposal.
  • In Foundations Of Engineering (ENGG1000), a foundation course for commencing undergraduate engineering students, The Learning Centre delivers a series of one-hour guest lectures on teamwork, writing design proposals and design reports, academic and technical writing conventions, and oral presentation skills. Supplemental learning materials (WRiSE & iWRITE Tutorials) have been developed and are included in the course Moodle component. These resources are designed to help students further their understanding and skills in the written engineering genres  and the academic literacy demands of the discipline .
